Washington, D.C. – This morning the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy issued the following statement in connection with the recent steps taken by the Administration and the Congress to enhance diversity and inclusion at the Department of State.

STATEMENT ON DIPLOMATIC DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION PROGRESS IN STATE AND CONGRESS

Board of Directors of the American Academy of Diplomacy

June 21, 2021

The American Academy of Diplomacy commends ongoing work to broaden and strengthen diversity and inclusion in America's diplomatic service. Diversity enhances U.S. national security interests in fielding the strongest possible diplomatic representation, as the Academy has recommended.

We are pleased by the commitment of the Administration to these goals, including in the establishment of a senior level Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer reporting to the Secretary of State.

We see progress also in the draft Diversity and Inclusion at the Department of State Act, which includes many of the diversity recommendations the Academy and others have made. We believe that legislation passed on a bipartisan basis would have the strongest effect. The Academy calls for and encourages both parties to work for bipartisan legislation and its early enactment, to ensure our country has the strongest team working on U.S. national security.
